Imported Jewellery in Pakistan: How to Buy Well

Imported fashion jewellery sits in a gap that nobody explains properly: it is not gold, it is not cheap plastic, and how long it lasts depends almost entirely on how you treat it. Worth understanding before you spend.

What "gold-tone" means

Gold-tone means a base metal — usually brass or steel — with a thin gold-coloured layer on top. It is not gold and it is not sold as gold. Anyone describing fashion jewellery as "gold" without the word plated or tone is being loose with language.

The useful question is what is underneath. Brass and stainless steel hold plating well. Very light alloys do not, and they are the ones that mark skin.

How long the plating lasts

Plating wears from friction, not from age. A bracelet worn daily on your writing hand wears faster than the same bracelet worn twice a month. Realistically, with sensible care, a well-plated piece keeps its finish for a year or two of regular wear.

What kills it early:

• Water — showering and washing hands with it on
• Perfume and lotion — sprayed after the jewellery is already on
• Storing it loose — pieces rubbing against each other in a box

If it turns your skin green

That is copper in the base metal reacting with moisture on your skin. It is harmless and it washes off, but it means the plating has worn through. A clear nail-polish coat on the inside surface buys some time; it is a patch, not a repair.

Buying online

Photographs flatten everything, so read the description rather than trusting the image. Two things are worth insisting on: what the metal actually is, and the measurements. A bangle that looks generous in a photo can be a size too small in a way no picture shows.

Check the clasp too. On bracelets the clasp fails long before the plating does, and a lobster clasp lasts far longer than a spring ring.

Storage that actually works

Dry, dark, separate. A soft pouch each, or a box with dividers. Not a bathroom shelf — steam is the fastest way to dull a finish, and most people keep jewellery in exactly the wrong room.
