Handmade Pearl Bags in Pakistan: What to Know Before You Buy

Pearl bags have gone from wedding-only to something carried at any dinner, and the market has filled up fast. Some of what is being sold is beaded by hand over days. Some of it is beads glued to a printed base and will shed within a season. From a photograph they look identical.

Here is how to tell them apart.

Hand-beaded or glued

This is the whole difference, and there is one reliable test: look at the back. On a hand-beaded bag you can see thread — small stitches holding each bead or each row, sometimes on a mesh backing. On a glued bag you see a flat sheet of adhesive and nothing else.

Second test: press a small area gently with your thumb. Hand-beading gives slightly and springs back because it is on thread. Glued beading is rigid and, if it is old, will crackle.

"Real pearls" — what that phrase usually means

Almost every pearl bag sold in Pakistan, at any price, uses faux pearls — glass or resin beads with a pearl coating. That is not a defect and it is not dishonest; real cultured pearls in the quantity a bag needs would put it into the lakhs.

What varies is the coating. A good faux pearl has a deep, slightly uneven lustre and feels cool. A cheap one looks flatly white under a light and warms up instantly in your hand. If a seller tells you a Rs 5,000 bag is real pearl, they are either mistaken or counting on you not asking.

Check the thread, not the beads

A beaded bag fails at the thread, never at the bead. Look at the point where the handle joins the body and where the strap rings are set — those carry the load. If the beading there looks the same as everywhere else, with no reinforcement, expect it to give.

The lining tells you the rest

A bag someone spent days beading will have a lining that was also sewn. A satin lining stitched in at the top is a good sign. A raw edge, or a lining glued in, tells you where the corners were cut.

What a pearl bag costs in Pakistan

Prices move a lot with size and how dense the beading is — a fully beaded tote is many times the work of a small clutch. What is worth knowing is that the price should track the amount of beading, not the brand name printed inside. If two bags are the same size and one costs three times the other, look at the back of both before deciding which is overpriced.
